Two kinds of bus, one road
Kochi’s local buses are mostly private buses — brightly painted, named after their owners or a saint or deity, and famous for racing each other to the next stop. KSRTC, the state corporation, runs ordinary, fast passenger and long-distance buses as well. For a resident, the difference matters less than the route board: both kinds stop at the main Kalamassery stops along the highway.
The spine is NH 544. Buses heading south towards Edappally, Kaloor, Ernakulam or Vyttila and north towards Aluva pass through Kalamassery all day. If you are standing on the highway, the next bus going your way is rarely far off in daytime. Our NH 544 guide explains the junctions.
Branch routes off the highway
Away from the highway, routes are fewer and timings matter more. The general patterns (check locally, as routes and timings change):
- HMT and Kakkanad side: buses run from Kalamassery via HMT Junction towards Kakkanad, using the Seaport–Airport Road. Useful for Infopark and the Collectorate area. See the HMT Junction guide and the Seaport–Airport Road guide.
- Medical College: besides private buses, KMRL’s Metro Connect feeder links Kalamassery metro and the Medical College. See Medical College Road.
- Eloor and FACT side: buses cross west via Pathalam towards Eloor and Udyogamandal. See Pathalam bridge and the Eloor road.
- Aluva via inner roads: some services take the older roads through Kadungallur or past UC College rather than the highway.
Fares and concessions
Since 1 May 2022 Kerala’s minimum fare on an ordinary bus has been ₹10, and on a city fast bus ₹12. Fares rise by distance, so a typical hop within Kalamassery or to Edappally costs only a little more than the minimum. KMRL’s Metro Connect feeder buses were launched in 2025 with a ₹20 minimum for the first 5 km.
Students in Kerala can travel at concession rates on many buses with a valid student ID or concession card; the rules and paperwork vary, so ask your college office. Keep small change — private bus conductors often struggle with ₹500 notes in the morning.
How to catch the right bus
- Learn the Malayalam names of two or three places you go to often; route boards are frequently in Malayalam first. Our Malayalam phrases page helps.
- Ask the conductor before boarding: ’Kalamassery pokumo?’ (’Does it go to Kalamassery?’).
- Wave clearly — private buses do not always stop if nobody signals.
- Have your fare ready and tell the conductor your stop; tickets are issued on board.
- Front seats are often reserved for women, the elderly and people with disabilities — check the signs.
Bus or metro?
For anything along the Aluva–Edappally–city line, the metro is faster at rush hour and more comfortable. Buses win on cost and on routes the metro does not follow — HMT, Kakkanad, Eloor and the Medical College. Many residents combine them. See Kalamassery metro station and the transport overview.
Early mornings, late nights and Sundays
Highway buses start early and run into the evening, but frequency drops noticeably after about 8–9 pm and on Sundays and public holidays, and branch routes may stop well before the highway ones. If you work a night shift, do not assume a bus will be there when you finish — check with colleagues, and read living on night shifts in Kalamassery. On hartal or strike days, private buses may not run at all; keep the metro and an auto number as back-ups.
