Key facts
- NH 544 is a 340 km national highway from Salem in Tamil Nadu to Edappally in Kochi, where it meets NH 66; it was formerly numbered NH 47.
- In Kalamassery, NH 544 meets NH 966A, the 17 km four-lane link road to the Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal.
- Kochi Metro Line 1 runs on a viaduct above NH 544 between Aluva and Edappally, with stations at Kalamassery and Cochin University.
- Until the Seaport–Airport Road’s HMT–NAD link is completed, traffic from Kalamassery to Cochin airport uses NH 544 through Aluva.

The highway in one paragraph
NH 544 starts at Salem in Tamil Nadu, crosses Coimbatore, the Palakkad Gap and Thrissur, and ends 340 km later at Edappally, where it meets NH 66. Older signboards and many locals still call it NH 47. Its last 10-odd kilometres — Aluva, Kalamassery, Edappally — are effectively a city road, with the Kochi Metro running on pillars down the middle.
Junctions from Aluva to Edappally
Travelling south from Aluva, these are the names you will hear (the metro stations are a handy guide to where you are):
| Area / junction | Nearest metro | What it is useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Aluva | Aluva | Railway station, bus stands, Aluva town — Aluva guide |
| Companypady, Ambattukavu | Companypady, Ambattukavu | Residential pockets — guide |
| Muttom | Muttom | Metro depot area, SCMS side |
| Kalamassery / Premier Junction | Kalamassery | Town, Apollo Tyres side, link road to Vallarpadam — Premier Junction |
| CUSAT Junction, South Kalamassery | Cochin University | University road, Thrikkakara side |
| Pathadipalam | Pathadipalam | Between Kalamassery and Edappally |
| Edappally | Edappally | End of NH 544; NH 66 junction, Lulu Mall, St George’s church |
At Kalamassery the highway also meets NH 966A, the 17 km four-lane road built to serve the Vallarpadam container terminal. It runs west through Manjummel, Cheranallur and Kothad to Bolgatty Island, crossing NH 66 at Cheranallur.
Why it jams
- Mixed traffic: commuters, buses stopping every few hundred metres, autos, lorries for the industrial areas and airport cabs all share the same lanes.
- Edappally: where NH 544 meets NH 66 and the crowds for Lulu Mall, the end of the highway is a regular bottleneck, especially on weekend evenings. See Lulu Mall from Kalamassery.
- Airport and Aluva traffic: with the Seaport–Airport Road incomplete, everything heading to the airport squeezes through Aluva on this road.
- Rain: in heavy monsoon showers, waterlogging at low points slows everything. See monsoon living tips.
- Festivals: Aluva Sivarathri and big events can mean diversions.
How to avoid the worst of it
- Use the metro for anything along the highway. It is the single best way to beat NH 544 traffic between Aluva, Kalamassery and Edappally.
- Go round, not through, for Kakkanad. For Infopark and the Collectorate, the Seaport–Airport Road from HMT avoids Edappally entirely.
- Learn the inner roads. Many short trips within Kalamassery do not need the highway at all. See quieter roads and daily routes.
- Shift your timings. Leaving 30 minutes before the office rush often makes a bigger difference than any route change.
- Avoid Edappally on weekend evenings unless you are going there.
Why an industrial suburb grew along a highway
Kalamassery’s factories — Premier Tyres (now Apollo Tyres), HMT and others — grew up along this road and the railway line beside it, because both connected the Periyar industrial belt with the port and the rest of India. That history explains why the highway still carries so many lorries, and why the Vallarpadam container link (NH 966A) branches off here rather than in the city. If the background interests you, read how Kalamassery became an industrial town.
The newer layer is the metro: since 2017 the viaduct above the highway has changed how people use the road. Many residents now cross NH 544 only to reach a metro entrance, and ride the train for the trips they once made by bus along it.
Safety on the highway
NH 544 is not a place for casual walking or cycling. Cross at signals or under the metro stations’ entrances where you can, never between moving buses, and keep well to the left on a two-wheeler — private buses pull in sharply. At night, wear something light-coloured if you have to walk along the edge. Two-wheeler riders should read living with a two-wheeler in Kalamassery.
