The honest answer
The Kochi Water Metro — battery-electric boats run by Kochi Metro Rail Limited’s water transport arm — is one of the best things about living in Kochi. But it was built for the islands and backwaters, not for the NH 544 corridor. From Kalamassery you would first have to get to Eloor, then take a boat to South Chittoor, then change for the High Court. For reaching MG Road or Ernakulam, the Kochi Metro is far quicker. Where the Water Metro shines is as a cheap, calm outing on a day off.
Routes that matter to Kalamassery residents
According to Wikipedia, the network had six routes and ten terminals in operation by late 2025:
| Route | Approx. length | Relevance from Kalamassery |
|---|---|---|
| South Chittoor – Cheranallur – Eloor | 5.2 km | The nearest route; start at Eloor |
| High Court – Bolgatty – Mulavukad North – South Chittoor | 7 km | Connects Eloor’s route to the city centre |
| High Court – Fort Kochi | 3.5 km | Onward to Fort Kochi |
| High Court – Vypin | 3.4 km | Onward to Vypin (towards Cherai) |
| High Court – Willingdon Island – Mattancherry | 4 km | Onward to Mattancherry |
| Vyttila – Kakkanad | 5.1 km | Separate; reached via Vyttila metro |
Eloor, Cheranallur, South Chittoor and Mulavukad North terminals were inaugurated in March 2024. Services and timings change — check the Water Metro’s own site or app before you go.
Getting to Eloor from Kalamassery
Eloor is the industrial island town immediately west of Kalamassery, across the Periyar’s branches. The usual way is by road across Pathalam bridge — by bus, auto or scooter. We have not given a walking time or exact terminal position here: check the Eloor Water Metro terminal on a map for your starting point. Our Eloor guide and Pathalam bridge and Eloor road guide describe the area.
What riding the Water Metro is like
The boats are modern, battery-electric and air-conditioned, quieter than the old ferries, with glass windows looking out over the backwaters. Terminals have ticket counters, card readers and waiting areas. Trips are short — most routes are 3–7 km — so the time on the water is modest; the total for a two-boat journey from Eloor to the High Court depends mostly on how long you wait for the connection at South Chittoor. In heavy monsoon weather services can be suspended for safety, which is another reason not to rely on it for getting to work.
If you enjoy being near the water, the Periyar’s branches around Eloor and Pathalam are also worth an evening walk; see Periyar riverside evenings.
Fares and passes
Wikipedia lists single fares from ₹20 to ₹40, and passes at about ₹180 a week, ₹600 a month and ₹1,500 a quarter. The Kochi1 card used on the metro has also been accepted on the Water Metro. These figures can change; treat them as a guide.
A good Sunday plan
- Get to the Eloor terminal mid-morning, before the heat builds.
- Ride to South Chittoor via Cheranallur and change for the High Court.
- From the High Court jetty, walk along Marine Drive or visit Mangalavanam — see the Mangalavanam and Marine Drive walk.
- Take a boat on to Fort Kochi or Vypin if you have time.
- Come back by Kochi Metro from MG Road or Maharaja’s towards Aluva.
It is the sort of trip that features in our cheap weekend plans — a few hundred rupees for a full day.
What is planned
Water Metro plans have long included more terminals, and a link along the Periyar from near Aluva metro station towards the airport has been proposed in news reports. None of these serves Kalamassery directly yet. If you are reading this much later, check the latest route map before deciding.

For residents of Ashraf Gents Hostel at the NAD Road signal, Kalamassery, the Water Metro is a day-off pleasure rather than a commute. Weekday travel to the city is usually by road and the Kochi Metro. The hostel is a men-only hostel/PG for students, staff and working men; its public profile lists the Seaport–Airport Road, the Science Park, Kochi RCC, the Medical College and NUALS among places within about 3 km.
