Key facts
- Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary covers about 2.74 hectares in central Kochi, behind the Kerala High Court and the old Ernakulam Terminus railway station.
- Mangalavanam was declared a sanctuary in 2004 and is often called the “green lung of Kochi”.
- Around 72 bird species have been recorded at Mangalavanam, including migratory waders such as the common redshank and marsh sandpiper.
- Marine Drive in Kochi (officially APJ Abdul Kalam Marg) is a walkway of about 1.75 km facing the backwaters, from High Court junction towards Rajendra Maidan.
- The Kochi Water Metro’s High Court terminal, near the north end of Marine Drive, has boats to Fort Kochi and Vypin.

Kochi’s smallest wild place
At about 2.74 hectares, Mangalavanam is tiny — you can walk round it in under an hour — but it is the last patch of the mangrove that once fringed this part of the backwater. It became a sanctuary in 2004 and is managed by the Kerala Forest Department. Wikipedia lists around 72 recorded bird species, from resident herons, cormorants and kites to migratory waders in the cooler months.
What makes it special is the contrast: a tidal lagoon, mangrove roots and nesting colonies, with the High Court on one side and apartment blocks rising on the others. Studies have warned that those high-rise buildings make it harder for birds to fly in and out, so the sanctuary’s future is a live conservation question in the city.
Getting there from Kalamassery
- Take the Kochi Metro south from Kalamassery towards the city. The nearest stations to High Court junction are in the MG Road and Maharaja’s College area; from there it is a short auto ride or a walk of a kilometre or two. Our Kalamassery metro station guide covers tickets and cards.
- Alternatively, take a bus to Ernakulam (Kacheripady or High Court junction). See buses in Kalamassery.
- Ask for High Court junction; the sanctuary entrance is on the road behind the court.
Coming back, the metro is the least tiring choice in evening traffic; the getting around hub explains how to combine it with a bus or auto at the Kalamassery end.
Visiting Mangalavanam
- Opening hours: listings give daytime hours, roughly 10 am to 5 pm. Check at the gate; forest-department rules apply.
- When: October to March is the best season for birds; early in the opening hours is quieter.
- What to bring: water, a cap, binoculars if you have them. There is little shade on the approach roads.
- Behaviour: keep your voice down, stay on the paths, no feeding. Photography of birds is fine; drone flying is not.
This is a protected area in a sensitive spot beside the High Court. Follow staff instructions and do not climb into the mangroves.
Then walk Marine Drive
From High Court junction, Marine Drive runs south along the backwater for about 1.75 km towards Rajendra Maidan. It was built on reclaimed land from the 1980s and, because of coastal protection rules, became a pedestrian walkway rather than the road first planned. Highlights along the way:
- Boat jetties — sightseeing boats leave from here; agree the price before boarding.
- The Chinese Fishing Net Bridge over the Mullassery canal near the children’s park.
- The Rainbow Bridge (1992) over the Market Canal near the GCDA shopping complex.
- Sunset over the backwater towards Bolgatty and Vypin — the reason most people come.
Evenings are busy with families and couples; it is generally well-lit and patrolled, but keep your phone out of reach of the edge and your wallet in a front pocket.

After a city evening, Kalamassery feels calmer — part of why some men working or studying in Kochi prefer to live there and visit the centre by metro. Ashraf Gents Hostel, at Ashraf house, NAD Road, by the signal in Kalamassery, is a men-only hostel and PG for students, staff and working men; the indicative rate on its public profile is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance, confirmed on the call.
