How the Biennale works

The Biennale is a large exhibition of contemporary art — installations, video, painting, performance — spread across old warehouses, heritage buildings and public spaces in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, with some venues in Ernakulam. It was started by the artists Bose Krishnamachari and Riyas Komu; the first edition opened on 12 December 2012.

Editions so far have opened in December and run for three to four months: 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, then a COVID-delayed fifth edition from December 2022, and a sixth edition from 12 December 2025 to 31 March 2026, titled *For the Time Being* and curated by Nikhil Chopra with the Goa-based HH Art Spaces. Reports said it brought together 66 artists and collectives from 25 countries.

As of October 2026 we have not confirmed dates for the seventh edition. Check the Kochi Biennale Foundation’s official website and news reports before planning; between editions the Foundation also runs smaller shows and programmes.

Venues to know

  • Aspinwall House, Fort Kochi — the main venue in recent editions, a long waterfront warehouse compound.
  • Pepper House and David Hall — smaller heritage buildings in Fort Kochi.
  • Cabral Yard — open ground used for pavilions and events.
  • Durbar Hall, Ernakulam — the art gallery building in the city, used in some editions; the easiest venue to reach directly by metro and walk.
  • Collateral and student shows in warehouses around Mattancherry and Jew Town.

Venue lists change each edition — pick up the map at the first venue you visit.

Getting there from Kalamassery

  1. Metro south from Kalamassery into the city. For the Water Metro, head for the High Court area; see Kalamassery metro station.
  2. Water Metro, High Court → Fort Kochi. The 3.5 km crossing was priced at about ₹40 when it opened, with boats roughly every 20 minutes and extra trips added during Biennale and holiday rushes. Read can you use the Water Metro from Kalamassery? for the details.
  3. Older state ferries also cross from Ernakulam to Fort Kochi and are usually cheaper but slower — ask at the boat jetty.
  4. By road, Fort Kochi is a long drive through the city and Willingdon Island; on Biennale weekends parking is scarce. Not recommended by bike on a busy day.

Overall, budget about one and a half hours each way door to door, more on weekends.

A plan for two visits

The Biennale is too big to see properly in one tired afternoon. A plan that works for working men and students with one day off:

  • Visit 1 (a weekday if possible) — Aspinwall House and the venues around it. Start when venues open; you will have the rooms almost to yourself.
  • Visit 2 — Mattancherry and the collateral shows, then sunset at the fishing nets.
  • Buy the right ticket. In past editions a single ticket covered several main venues, with concessions for students and some free days — check the current rules and carry your ID.
  • Eat cheaply. Fort Kochi cafés are priced for tourists; local tea shops and meals hotels a few streets back are much cheaper. See eating on a budget.

Why it is worth the trip

You do not need to know anything about art. Many visitors are students, families and workers who come for the buildings, the sea air and the experience of walking into a warehouse and finding something unexpected. For men from other states living in Kochi, it is also one of the few events where the whole city — and visitors from abroad — mix freely. Our list of day trips from Kalamassery has more on Fort Kochi beyond the Biennale.

Living on the north side, visiting the south

Fort Kochi is at the far end of the city from Kalamassery, but the metro plus Water Metro makes it a straightforward outing. Ashraf Gents Hostel, a boys’ hostel and PG at Ashraf house, NAD Road, by the signal in Kalamassery, houses students, staff and working men; its public profile lists an indicative rate of about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with a month’s advance, confirmed on +91 90746 23855. Room photos are on the home page.
