The three kinds of grocery shop you will use
1. The provision store near your room
Every residential lane in Kalamassery has a small ‘stores’ or provision shop selling rice, oil, sugar, tea powder, eggs, bread, biscuits, soap and phone recharges. Prices are close to MRP and the owner will often weigh out rice, dal or sugar loose. Use it for daily top-ups. Once you become a regular, many shopkeepers keep a running monthly account – but don’t expect that in your first week.
2. Supermarkets on the main roads
The bigger self-service supermarkets cluster along NH 544 and the busier junctions. Kerala has several regional chains and franchise brands, including Margin Free Market, which began as a consumer cooperative venture and sells many packaged goods below MRP. National chains and hypermarkets are further south at Edappally – the hypermarket at Lulu Mall is the best known. We have not named individual supermarkets in Kalamassery because outlets change; search a map app for ‘supermarket’ around your address and look at recent photos and reviews.
3. Supplyco and Maveli Stores
Supplyco is the Kerala government’s civil supplies corporation, headquartered in Ernakulam. It runs Supplyco supermarkets and smaller Maveli Stores (named after the legendary King Mahabali). Under the state’s market-intervention programme, certain rice varieties, pulses, chillies, coriander and coconut oil are sold at subsidised prices, with monthly quantity limits.
Subsidised prices are tied to a Kerala ration card. If you have moved from another district or state, you can still buy the regular-priced stock, which is often competitive. Ask at the counter what applies to you.
What Supplyco prices look like
To give a sense of scale, during the 2025 Onam fairs Supplyco published a list that included (subsidised price, with non-subsidised price alongside):
| Item | Subsidised (₹) | Non-subsidised (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| Jaya rice, 1 kg | 33 | 41 |
| Maveli matta rice, 1 kg | 33 | 43 |
| Green gram (cherupayar), 1 kg | 90 | 108.36 |
| Bengal gram (kadala), 1 kg | 65 | 86.20 |
| Tur dal, 1 kg | 93 | 110.34 |
These were festival-season figures reported by Onmanorama; prices are revised from time to time, so treat them as a guide, not today’s rate.
Buying in bulk when you share a kitchen
If two to four men share cooking, pooling money for a monthly order cuts both cost and trips. A simple system that works:
- Agree a fixed monthly kitty per person and keep a notebook or a shared note on the phone.
- Buy non-perishables in bulk once a month: rice (5–10 kg bags), atta, dal, sugar, tea powder, salt, coconut oil, spice powders, soap.
- Buy perishables – vegetables, eggs, milk, bread – every two or three days from the nearest shop.
- Label your own items (curd, pickle, snacks) to avoid arguments.
- Check expiry dates on spice powders and oil; a 1 kg pack of chilli powder lasts a small group a long time.
For what to put on that list, see the hostel kitchen shopping list for Kerala. Fresh produce is covered in fish and vegetable markets near Kalamassery.
Small habits that save money
- Carry a cloth bag: Kerala restricts single-use plastic carry bags, and shops may charge for bags or not offer them.
- Compare the price per kg, not the pack price – small packs in supermarkets are often dearer per kg than loose goods at the provision store.
- Kerala staples (matta rice, coconut oil, local brands of spice powder) are usually cheaper than brands from other states, which may be stocked only in bigger supermarkets.
- Use UPI where you can; most shops accept it, but keep some cash for small stalls.
- Watch for Onam and Christmas fairs, when Supplyco runs special markets.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a Supplyco or Maveli Store in Kalamassery?
Supplyco runs outlets across Ernakulam district, and most municipalities have at least one. Check Supplyco’s outlet list or a map app for the nearest one to your address.
Can someone without a Kerala ration card buy at Supplyco?
Yes, at regular prices. Subsidised prices and quantities are linked to ration cards, so ask at the counter what you are eligible for.
Is it cheaper to buy groceries at a mall hypermarket?
Sometimes, during offers, but the metro fare and time often cancel the saving for small purchases. Hypermarkets make sense for a big monthly shop or items you cannot find locally.
Which rice do Kerala households usually buy?
Matta (Kerala red rice) is the everyday rice in many homes; white rice such as Jaya or ponni is also widely sold. Matta takes longer to cook.
