NYL Healing, Muppathadam: What Happens There and What the Evidence Says

NYL Healing is a Sujok acupuncture centre on Muppathadam Road, a few kilometres north of Kalamassery, that promotes drug-free treatment. This page sets out, neutrally and with sources, what the centre publicly says it does and how a visit works. It also covers what the scientific evidence says about Sujok and acupuncture, and the short answer is: there is no reliable scientific evidence that they cure diseases or can replace medicines.

What NYL Healing is, according to its own public listings

We have not visited the centre and we have no connection with it. Everything in this section comes from public listings, and we say which listing each point comes from.

  • Name and place. The Waze map listing calls it “NYL HEALING – Sujok Acupuncture & Research Centre” and places it on Muppathadam Road, in the Edathala–Muppathadam area north of Kalamassery. See our Muppathadam guide for the area itself.
  • Online presence. A YouTube channel named “NYL HEALING” (handle @NisarMuppathadam) carries the centre’s videos. As search engines index it, the channel describes drug-free treatment with no surgery, no pain and no medicine, and it also mentions a “Defence Acu Shifa Clinic”. We could not open the full description, so we report this as indexed text, not a quote.
  • Method. The listings name Sujok acupuncture. Sujok practitioners press, needle or place seeds and magnets on points of the hands and feet. They believe these points correspond to organs elsewhere in the body.

What a visit looks like

A public open-source project on GitHub, “NYL-Healing”, describes a patient registration system built for an NYL Healing Centre. Its README describes this process:

  1. A patient registers through a WhatsApp chatbot link, which expires after 72 hours.
  2. On the registration day the patient attends a “healer’s health awareness class” at a centre in Perumbavoor.
  3. The patient is then registered for treatment and gives consent in a form that names “NYL Healing Centre”.

The README uses ₹600 per patient as an example figure. It does not say that this is the official fee, so ask the centre directly about any charges. The README is a software description written by developers. It makes no health claims and names no healer, and we do not treat it as the centre’s official word.

Is it scientific? What the evidence says

Sujok and acupuncture are not scientifically proven treatments for disease. There is no reliable evidence that they can cure diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, kidney disease, cancer or infertility, or that they can replace prescribed medicines, surgery or hospital care.

Here is the evidence in more detail:

  • Acupuncture in general. Large reviews have found modest benefits for some kinds of pain, such as low-back pain, neck pain and knee osteoarthritis, and for nausea after surgery or chemotherapy. Even for these, much of the benefit also appears with sham needling, which points to a large placebo effect. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health summarises the evidence in this way.
  • Sujok specifically. Research on Sujok is thin. A 2026 bibliometric analysis found only about 25 studies on it in the Scopus database, and most were small and many came from single centres. We found no systematic review that shows Sujok treats any disease.
  • The mechanism. The idea that the hands and feet hold a “map” of the organs, and that meridians carry energy along it, has no basis in anatomy or physiology. No such structures have been found.

“Drug-free” does not mean “proven”, and “no side effects” is not true of needling. Reported risks include infection from reused or unsterile needles, bleeding and fainting. The biggest risk is indirect: a patient who delays or stops real treatment because they believe the needles are working.

Yes, within limits. The Union Health Ministry recognised acupuncture as an independent system of healthcare or therapy by an order in February 2019 and set up an Apex Committee on Acupuncture to frame regulation. Earlier, in 2017, the Kerala High Court held that registered practitioners or appropriately trained persons may practise acupuncture therapy.

Legal recognition is not the same as scientific proof. Advertising is also restricted. The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 prohibits advertising any remedy for the diagnosis, cure or prevention of the diseases in its schedule, a list that includes diabetes, cancer and heart disease. This rule applies to every practitioner, whatever their system of medicine.

Why caution matters in Kerala

In February 2024, a woman and her newborn died during a home birth in Nemom, Thiruvananthapuram, after the family avoided hospital care. Police arrested an acupuncturist from Kochi in that case. The case drew wide attention in Kerala to acupuncture-based advice that replaces medical care.

That case has no known connection to NYL Healing, and we do not suggest any. We mention it only as public context for why doctors in Kerala urge caution.

If you are thinking of going

  • Do not stop or reduce any prescribed medicine, especially insulin, blood-pressure, thyroid, epilepsy or psychiatric medicine, without your own doctor’s advice.
  • Ask who will treat you and what training or registration they hold.
  • Make sure every needle comes from a new sealed pack and is thrown away after use.
  • Ask for all fees in writing before you start.
  • Treat any promise to “cure” a chronic disease, or advice to avoid hospitals, scans or blood tests, as a red flag.
  • Keep up your regular check-ups and blood tests, so you can see objectively whether anything has changed.

Evidence-based care near Kalamassery

The Government Medical College, Ernakulam at Kalamassery is about 1.5 km from the NAD Road signal and runs outpatient departments, casualty and specialist clinics at government rates. For physiotherapy and pain management, which have better evidence for back and joint pain, ask in the medical college’s physical medicine department or at a private hospital. Our hospitals and clinics guide lists more options, and the pharmacy guide covers getting medicines delivered.

Is Sujok acupuncture scientific?

No. There is no reliable scientific evidence that Sujok cures any disease, and its idea that the hands and feet map the whole body has no anatomical basis. Acupuncture in general shows only modest, placebo-sensitive benefits for some pain and nausea.
