Key facts
- The Pathalam regulator-cum-bridge crosses the Periyar near Eloor; its shutters, operated by the Irrigation Department, hold back saline water during the dry season.
- When shutters at the Pathalam regulator were opened on 20 May 2024 after a long closure, low-oxygen water and sludge flowed downstream, and a major fish kill followed, according to Kerala’s pollution control board.
- St. Joseph’s Hospital in Manjummel dates from the 1880s and is described by Wikipedia as one of Kerala’s first mission or private hospitals.
- The 2024 Malayalam film Manjummel Boys is about a group of friends from Manjummel.
- The name Manjummel is traditionally derived from the Malayalam “Manjumala”, meaning snowy mountain.

Two names, one riverbank
Head west from Kalamassery towards Eloor and you reach the Periyar at Pathalam. On the far side and along the bank lies Manjummel, which Wikipedia’s Eloor article treats as part of the Eloor area (St. Joseph’s Hospital, Manjummel, is listed among Eloor’s landmarks). Most people use the names for landmarks rather than official boundaries: “Pathalam” for the bridge and junction, “Manjummel” for the church, hospital and the neighbourhood around them.
For the road itself – traffic, bus stops and the industrial approach – see our companion Pathalam Bridge and the Eloor road. This page is about the places.
Pathalam and its regulator
The Pathalam regulator-cum-bridge does two jobs: it carries traffic across the Periyar, and its shutters let the Irrigation Department control the river. In the dry months the shutters stay down to keep salt water from the backwaters pushing upstream, which, as it is generally explained locally, helps protect upstream water supplies and farmland.
That closure has a cost. When three shutters were opened on 20 May 2024 after a long closure, water with high organic load and very little dissolved oxygen, along with settled sludge, rushed downstream – and a large fish kill followed, hurting fish farmers in the area. The Kerala State Pollution Control Board’s later report to the courts described this sequence; who bears responsibility remains disputed. Locals now watch shutter openings closely, especially at the start of the monsoon.
During heavy rain the shutters may be opened suddenly and the river can rise and run fast. Keep away from the edge and from the regulator’s structure, and do not fish or swim near it.
Manjummel: church, hospital and a famous film
- Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church – a century-old church that Wikipedia names as one of Manjummel’s two iconic landmarks.
- St. Joseph’s Hospital – founded in the 1880s (sources give 1886 or 1887) and described as one of Kerala’s first mission or private hospitals.
- Kottakunnu – Wikipedia records a fort built here by a Travancore ruler to defend against Tipu Sultan’s attacks.
- The name – traditionally from *Manjumala*, “snowy mountain”.
The 2024 film Manjummel Boys, about a group of friends from here and a trip to Kodaikanal that goes wrong, made the name known across India. You may meet visitors who come just to see the place; there is not much “tourist” infrastructure, so be polite about photographing homes and people.
Daily life by the river
Both neighbourhoods are a mix of older homes, church and temple communities and industrial workers’ housing, close to the Eloor and FACT belt. Evenings by the water are pleasant – our Periyar riverside evenings suggests safer spots – but this is a working river, not a beach. Like Eloor, the area has a long history of pollution complaints; read the Eloor guide before moving here.
For shopping and transport, residents generally go to Kalamassery’s HMT Junction or to Aluva. There is no metro on this side of the river.
For FACT and Eloor workers: a mainland room nearby
If you work across the river but would rather sleep on the Kalamassery side, Ashraf Gents Hostel is at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal, Kalamassery 683563 – a boys’ hostel and PG for students, staff and working men. Its photos, in the gallery, show twin-sharing rooms, a balcony, a kitchen and a tiled bathroom. Workers heading to the plant gates should read our FACT Udyogamandal guide too.
The indicative rate is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance. Call +91 90746 23855 to confirm, and time the Pathalam crossing at your shift hours before you decide.
