A college with a century behind it
UC College was founded in 1921 by four young teachers from Madras Christian College — K. C. Chacko, C. P. Mathew, V. M. Ittiyerah and A. M. Varki — and is one of the earliest colleges in India founded and run by Indian Christians. Mahatma Gandhi visited in 1925 on his way to the Vaikom Satyagraha and wrote in the visitors’ book that he was “delighted with the ideal situation”.
The campus covers about 18 acres on the Aluva–Paravur Road, beside the Periyar. Wikipedia mentions the protected Kacheri Malika building, a 1940 chapel and ‘Gandhi’s mango tree’. The college is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University and has around 2,200 students across 14 undergraduate and 14 postgraduate programmes.
Where UC College sits in relation to Kalamassery
UC College is on the western side of Aluva town, along the road towards North Paravur. Kalamassery is south of Aluva on NH 544. So the trip is: Kalamassery → Aluva town → out along the Paravur road. The river and the Aluva Manappuram are close by — pleasant, but during Sivarathri the whole area gets crowded.
Our Aluva town guide explains the town’s layout and bus stands.
Commuting options, honestly compared
| Route | How it works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Metro + bus/auto | Kochi Metro from Kalamassery to Aluva, then a bus or auto on the Paravur road | Two changes; the Aluva end of the trip is in traffic |
| Bus all the way | NH 544 bus to Aluva, then a Paravur-side bus | Peak-hour crowding; check which buses stop near the college |
| Two-wheeler | Via NH 544 and Aluva town | Aluva town junctions jam at college and office hours |
We have not timed this route reliably — try it once on a weekday morning before you commit. See Buses in Kalamassery and NH 544 through Kalamassery for the main corridor.
Who should — and shouldn’t — live in Kalamassery
If UC has a hostel place for you, or you can find a room within walking distance of the campus, that is usually simpler for a first-year undergraduate. Kalamassery makes more sense when:
- you are a postgraduate or research scholar who also uses libraries or labs at CUSAT or elsewhere in Kochi;
- you have a part-time job or internship near Kalamassery or Kakkanad;
- you are sharing with a brother or friend who studies or works in Kalamassery;
- you want a cheaper base with more food and shopping options.
Research scholars and PG students: a different calculation
Wikipedia notes that eight UC departments are university-recognised research centres with over 120 research scholars. Scholars’ timetables are irregular: a few days on campus, then library visits, fieldwork or conferences. For them, being near a metro station and NH 544 can matter more than being near the college gate.
Kalamassery puts the CUSAT library and the city within easy reach while UC remains a commute away. If you are a scholar, list where you actually need to be in a typical week before deciding; our libraries and study spaces guide may help.
Ashraf Gents Hostel as a base for UC students
Ashraf Gents Hostel is a boys’ hostel and PG at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal in Kalamassery, for students, staff and working men. UC College is not on its list of places within about 3 km, so this is a commuting option via Aluva rather than a walk-to-class one.

Photos show twin-sharing rooms with cots and mattresses, red-oxide floors, a balcony, a kitchen with sink and shelves, and a tiled bathroom with a western toilet. The indicative rate from the public profile is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance. Confirm the current rate, and ask about food and Wi-Fi, on +91 90746 23855.
