JLPT for Kerala Candidates: Test Cities, Dates and How to Register

If you are learning Japanese in Kalamassery, the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the certificate employers and universities ask for. Kerala has no JLPT test centre, so you will travel. The official list of test sites puts the nearest at Chennai, Bengaluru and Karur in Tamil Nadu. In 2026 the tests are on 5 July and 6 December. Here is how to plan it.

Key facts

  • The JLPT’s official list of overseas test sites has no city in Kerala. The nearest Indian test cities are Chennai, Bengaluru and Karur.
  • In Chennai the local host institution is ABK-AOTS DOSOKAI, Tamilnadu Centre. In Bengaluru it is Bangalore Nihongo Kyooshi-kai (BNK).
  • The JLPT is held twice a year in India. The 2026 sessions are on Sunday 5 July and Sunday 6 December.
  • You register and pay through the local host institution, not directly with Japan. Fees are set locally, and seats at popular levels can fill before the deadline.
  • N4 is the level Japan accepts for the Specified Skilled Worker (i) visa, alongside the computer-based JFT-Basic test.

Check the official JLPT overseas list each year, because test cities and hosts can change. Each host sets its own registration window and fee. A third-party guide reported Chennai’s registration for December 2026 running in August, with N4 seats filling early. Register on the first day the window opens.

Levels in one line each

  • N5: basic kana, around 100 kanji, simple sentences. This is where beginner courses start.
  • N4: everyday Japanese. It is the usual target for SSW (i) work visas.
  • N3: the bridge to working comfortably in Japanese. Useful for promotions and SSW (ii) in some fields.
  • N2 and N1: business and academic Japanese, often asked for office jobs and university admission.

The JLPT tests reading and listening only, with no speaking or writing. Employers often run their own interview in Japanese, so practise speaking separately.

Registration checklist

  1. Choose your level and test city when you start your course, not at the end.
  2. Watch the host institution’s website from March (for July) and August (for December).
  3. Keep a passport-size photo and an ID ready, and use your name exactly as it appears on your passport.
  4. Pay the fee only through the host institution. It is non-refundable.
  5. Print your admit card (voucher) and check the exam venue address.

Travelling to the test from Kalamassery

The exam is on a Sunday, so most candidates travel on Saturday night and come back on Sunday night. From Kalamassery the Aluva and Ernakulam stations and the KSRTC and private buses towards Bengaluru and Chennai are all close. Our Bengaluru and Chennai bus guide and entrance-exam day guide have timing tips. Book early in December, because Christmas travel starts the following weeks.

JFT-Basic: the alternative for work visas

If you need Japanese only for an SSW (i) work visa, Japan also accepts the Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese (JFT-Basic). It is computer-based and held more often than the twice-yearly JLPT. Check the Japan Foundation’s JFT-Basic site for current Indian test venues. For study, office jobs or a certificate employers recognise anywhere, the JLPT remains the standard.

Preparing in Kalamassery

The Nippon Kerala Centre course covers N5–N4 in 100 hours, and the government ASAP Kerala course takes N5 holders to N4 in 150 hours. For quiet revision, see libraries and study spaces. If the exam is for a job, read our Japan jobs guide.
