Which SCMS campus are you going to?
‘SCMS’ is a group name, and new students regularly end up at the wrong gate. The Prathap Nagar, Muttom campus on NH 544 houses SCMS School of Technology and Management (SSTM) and SCMS Cochin School of Business (the group’s older B-school). SCMS School of Engineering and Technology (SSET) is a separate college at Karukutty, well north of Aluva towards Angamaly.
This guide is for the Muttom campus. If your admission letter says Karukutty, Kalamassery is much less convenient.
What SSTM offers
According to the SCMS website, SSTM was established in 2003 and its courses are affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. Programmes listed include:
- Postgraduate: MBA, MCA, M.Sc Psychology, M.Sc Molecular Biology & Genetic Engineering, M.Sc Biotechnology, and a PhD in Management.
- Undergraduate: BBA (Hons), BCA (Hons), B.Com (Hons), B.Sc Psychology and B.Sc Biotechnology.
- An integrated five-year MCA.
The website also mentions campus hostels. Check availability, rules and cost with the college first; this guide is for students who prefer to live outside.
Getting to Muttom from Kalamassery
This is where Kalamassery shines. Muttom is the next Kochi Metro station north of Kalamassery on Line 1, so the metro ride itself is a single stop. From Muttom station, the campus is along NH 544 — ask seniors for the safest crossing and walking route, as the highway is busy.
Buses heading to Aluva along NH 544 also pass Muttom, and a two-wheeler ride is short outside peak traffic. Read the Kalamassery metro station guide, our page on Companypady, Ambattukavu and Muttom, and NH 544 through Kalamassery for the traffic pattern.
Kochi Metro runs from around 6 am, and KMRL announced in February 2026 that last trains from terminals would leave at 11 pm. Late library evenings are covered; check current timings with KMRL.
Why some SCMS students prefer to live in Kalamassery
- More choice of rooms than in the immediate Muttom area.
- Food and shops — Kalamassery has far more small hotels, bakeries and supermarkets; see supermarkets and groceries.
- Internships — MBA and MCA students often intern at KINFRA Hi-Tech Park, Kerala Startup Mission or companies further south; see summer internships in Kalamassery.
- Mixing — friends at CUSAT, NUALS and other colleges nearby.
Course rhythms that affect where you live
Different SSTM programmes put different demands on a student’s living arrangements. MBA students tend to have long days with group work, presentations and placement preparation, so a room where you can work late on a laptop matters. Biotechnology and life-science students spend time in labs and may stay back for experiments. Integrated MCA students are on campus for five years and often move out of the college hostel in later years for more independence.
Whatever the course, consider who you will share with. Two MBA students in a twin room can split the costs and the late-night deadline stress; a lab student and a night-owl coder may clash. Mention your course when you enquire about any room.
