A township first, a suburb later

Much of North Kalamassery was shaped by HMT, the public-sector machine-tool company, whose Kalamassery factory brought staff quarters, roads and schools to what had been open land. Roads: NAD Road, HMT Road and the unfinished bypass

Two local roads matter. HMT Road links HMT Junction on NH 544 with HMT, KINFRA and the Medical College. NAD Road runs from the Kalamassery side, past Kalamassery railway station, towards the depot area near Aluva. Neither carries the through-traffic of the national highway – our NAD Road guide goes into detail.

The Seaport–Airport Road is meant to cut through here. Its first phase, from Kalamassery HMT south to Karingachira near Tripunithura, opened in 2003. The 2.7 km link between HMT and NAD stalled for about two decades over defence and HMT land; Onmanorama reported in January 2026 that tenders had finally been invited, with 12 months for construction. Everyday life

Shops on the HMT Colony side are fewer and simpler than at HMT Junction: tea shops, small groceries and eateries near the Medical College junction. For a full shop most people ride to HMT Junction or take the metro to Edappally. Evenings are noticeably quieter than the highway, which suits students and night-shift workers who need day sleep.

Walking at night: some institutional stretches are long and dimly lit. Carry a torch on your phone and keep to the main roads after dark.
