Thrikkakara Temple and the Onam Connection

The Vamanamoorthy temple at Thrikkakara, a short ride from Kalamassery, is the temple Kerala links most closely with Onam. Its ten-day festival runs from Atham to Thiruvonam, and a visit then — or on any ordinary morning — explains a good deal about the state you have just moved to.

Why this temple matters for Onam

Onam retells one story: the generous asura king Mahabali ruled Kerala in a golden age, Vishnu came as the dwarf Brahmin Vamana, asked for three paces of land, and pushed the king down to the netherworld — with permission to visit his people once a year. That visit is Thiruvonam.

Most temples dedicated to Vishnu show him in his more common forms. Thrikkakara is one of the rare shrines where the main deity is Vamana himself, shown about to place his foot on Mahabali. Tradition holds that Thrikkakara was Mahabali’s capital, so the temple sits at the very centre of the festival’s story.

Kerala Tourism’s account of the temple adds a historical layer: the Chera emperor is said to have held an annual gathering of local rulers here during the festival season, and when travel to Thrikkakara became difficult, people were asked to celebrate Onam in their own homes by installing an image of the Thrikkakara deity. That is the tradition behind the clay Thrikkakara Appan figures placed in front of homes and in pookalam designs during Onam.

What happens during the festival

  • Atham — flag hoisting. The festival opens with the kodiyettam, the raising of the temple flag, on Atham day in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September).
  • Ten days of rituals. Daily processions with caparisoned elephants, decorations of the idol and cultural performances in the temple grounds.
  • Thiruvonam — aarattu. The festival ends with the ritual bath and procession on Thiruvonam day.
  • The Onam sadya. The temple is known for serving a large Onam feast; According to Kerala Tourism, everyone who visits the temple on Uthradom and Thiruvonam is served sadya, and the numbers now run into the tens of thousands. Expect long queues and check the current arrangement locally.

In 2026 Thiruvonam fell on 26 August. For future years, look up the Kerala government holiday list or a Malayalam calendar; the dates move with the star calendar, not a fixed date.

Visiting from Kalamassery

Thrikkakara is next door — the temple lies in Thrikkakara municipality, on the stretch Kerala Tourism describes as between Edappally and Pookattupadi, and a short bus or auto ride from Kalamassery and the CUSAT area. Our Thrikkakara local guide explains the neighbourhood, and the Cochin University metro station guide covers the nearest metro stop if you want to combine metro and auto.

  • Ordinary days are calm: you can visit in the early morning or evening worship hours without much crowd. Ask at the counter about exact timings.
  • Festival days, especially the last three, draw large crowds and road diversions around the temple. Leave the bike at home if you can.
  • Dress code: as at most Kerala temples, men are usually expected to remove shirts and wear a mundu or dhoti inside the inner precincts. Follow the board at the gate.
  • Non-Hindus: entry rules to the inner temple vary in Kerala. Check at the entrance and respect what you are told; the festival grounds and sadya area are a different matter.

Never photograph inside the sanctum. Phones are often discouraged in the inner areas.
