Onam in one paragraph
Onam welcomes back Mahabali, the legendary king of Kerala, on his yearly visit to his people. It is a harvest-season festival celebrated by Malayalis of every religion — you will see pookalam flower carpets in offices, colleges, churches’ parish halls and mosques’ neighbourhoods alike. The ten days run from Atham to Thiruvonam; the last two or three are the real holidays. For the temple side of the story, read Thrikkakara Temple and the Onam connection — the most famous Onam temple is a few kilometres from Kalamassery.
A calendar for your first Onam
| When | What you notice |
|---|---|
| About 10 days before Thiruvonam (Atham) | Pookalams appear; Athachamayam procession at Thrippunithura; shops start Onam sales |
| Last week before | Office and college celebrations, sadya at work, heavy shopping at Edappally, Aluva and Broadway |
| Uthradom (the eve) | The busiest shopping day; vegetable and banana prices often rise; markets crowded till late |
| Thiruvonam | Family day. Many small shops, eateries and offices close; fewer buses |
| Third and fourth Onam | Holidays continue; things reopen gradually; return travel rush begins |
In 2026, the government list marked 25–28 August (First Onam to Fourth Onam) as holidays, with Thiruvonam on 26 August. Dates shift each year with the Malayalam star calendar, so check the Kerala holiday list for your year.
What actually closes — and what to do about it
This is where newcomers get caught. On Thiruvonam day, and to a lesser extent the day after, assume that:
- Many small hotels and tea shops close, because the owners and staff are home with family. Large chain restaurants and mall food courts are more likely to open, but do not count on any single place.
- Banks and government offices close for the holiday block. Do your cash withdrawals and any bank work beforehand; ATMs near busy junctions can run dry.
- Fewer buses run and autos are scarcer, especially in the evening. The metro generally runs, but check the KMRL notice for holiday timings.
- Long-distance trains and buses out of Kochi fill up weeks ahead, in both directions. Book early if you are going home.
The practical fix is simple: stock up on Uthradom morning, before the crowds. Rice, dal, eggs, bread, bananas, biscuits and a few vegetables carry most men through two days. Our hostel kitchen shopping list and the guide to supermarkets and groceries near Kalamassery will help.
Getting a sadya
The Onam sadya — rice with sambar, parippu, avial, thoran, olan, pachadi, pickles, papadam, banana and two or three kinds of payasam, all on a banana leaf — is the one thing you should not miss. Ways to get one as a single man away from home:
- Office or college celebration — usually in the days before the holiday. The easiest option.
- Pre-booked parcel sadya — many hotels and caterers take orders in advance; the containers come with everything packed separately. Book early, as they stop taking orders once full.
- A friend’s house — Malayali colleagues are often genuinely happy to invite someone who is alone for Onam. Accept, arrive on time, eat with your right hand, and fold the leaf towards you when finished.
- Temple sadyas — some temples, including Thrikkakara, serve a feast during the festival; ask locally about the arrangement that year.

Things worth seeing
- Pookalam designs at colleges, offices and shopfronts — CUSAT and the colleges around Kalamassery put real effort into theirs.
- Athachamayam at Thrippunithura on Atham day: a large street procession with floats and folk art forms. The metro now reaches Thrippunithura Terminal.
- The Thrikkakara festival, especially the final days.
- Onam games — tug of war, uriyadi (pot-breaking) and others — at residents’ associations and clubs; outsiders are usually welcome to watch.
If you have a free day during the holidays, quieter outings are in our day trips from Kalamassery list — but remember that hill and beach spots get crowded during Onam too.
If you are staying in a hostel over Onam
Hostel life is quiet during Onam — half the residents leave. Before the holiday, ask the people who run your place what changes: whether the kitchen is open, who to call if something goes wrong, and when the gate is locked. At Ashraf Gents Hostel, NAD Road, Kalamassery, a men-only hostel and PG for students, staff and working men, those questions are best asked directly on +91 90746 23855; food, timings and services are not promised and should be confirmed on the call. The rooms shown on the photos are twin-sharing with a shared kitchen and bathroom.
