Why Kochi needed its own cancer centre
For decades, cancer patients from central Kerala who needed specialist public care travelled to the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram or to Thrissur. The government cancer centre for Kochi was placed on the campus of Government Medical College, Ernakulam at Kalamassery. The state’s health portal says the CCRC was set up to serve central Kerala and neighbouring parts of Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
This page is about how the institution and its building came about. For what the centre is today and how to visit, see the CCRC explained and how to reach the CCRC.
The timeline

|---|---|---|
| 18 August 2014 | Foundation stone laid | Wikipedia: Government Medical College, Ernakulam |
| 2016 | CCRC established as an autonomous institution under the Health Department | Kerala health portal |
| About 2016–2018 | Out-patient wing runs in the Medical College pay-ward building, with chemotherapy and limited in-patient care | Deccan Chronicle, October 2018 |
| October 2018 | Mammography unit and a speech and swallow clinic among new additions; own building under construction | Deccan Chronicle |
| 24 December 2024 | Building expected to be handed over by 30 January 2025 and opened in early February 2025; ₹383 crore, 360 beds | Medical Dialogues |
| 2025 | Opening slips; equipment installation continues | Medical Dialogues; later reports |
| 9 February 2026 | Nine-storey building inaugurated by the Chief Minister | Medical Buyer; INKEL |
We could not find a reliable date for the start of construction of the new building, so it is not in the table. An earlier report said the government planned to seek KIIFB (Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board) money for the project, but the reports we opened did not state the final funding source, so we have not confirmed it here.
Years in a borrowed building
From about 2016 the CCRC worked out of the pay-ward building of the Medical College, according to Deccan Chronicle’s October 2018 report on the centre’s ‘expansion mode’. That arrangement gave patients consultations, chemotherapy and a small number of in-patient beds, but little room to grow. The same report described new services being added within those limits, including mammography and a speech and swallow clinic, while the permanent building rose elsewhere on the campus.
For patients and families this meant a centre that existed in name and service but not yet in bricks. Many local people still called it ‘Kochi RCC’, a borrowed nickname from Thiruvananthapuram’s Regional Cancer Centre.
A target that slipped
By late 2024 the new building was close to finished. Medical Dialogues reported on 24 December 2024 that Industries Minister P. Rajeeve had said equipment installation was progressing, with handover expected by 30 January 2025 and inauguration in the first week of February 2025. That report gave the cost as ₹383 crore, the built area as 6.4 lakh sq ft and the bed count as 360, and mentioned a master plan including proton therapy.
The opening did not happen in 2025. The record we found does not explain the full reason for the delay, and we have not speculated about it.
February 2026: the opening
Medical Buyer reported that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would inaugurate the building at 3 pm on 9 February 2026, with Health Minister Veena George presiding. INKEL’s account of the event adds that Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal attended and that Opposition Leader V. D. Satheesan was chief guest.
- Nine storeys on 12.63 acres of the Medical College campus.
- About 6.3 lakh sq ft built-up (INKEL gives 6.35 lakh sq ft in four blocks).
- Twelve operation theatres, one kept for future robotic surgery.
- About 10,000 sq ft for research, up from the 7,000 sq ft mentioned in 2024.
- Sixteen lifts and parking for about 550 cars; solar power and EDGE green-building certification, described as a first for a hospital building in Kerala.
- Beds: 360 in the December 2024 report, 451 in INKEL’s description.
Cost figures also differ — ₹383 crore in December 2024, nearly ₹450 crore including equipment at the opening. Both are as reported.
Why this history matters at the NAD signal
The new CCRC block stands a short distance from the NAD Road signal, and its opening brought new staff, students and patients’ relatives to this side of Kalamassery. Ashraf Gents Hostel, a men-only hostel at the signal, names the RCC and Medical College among places within about 3 km on its public profile; men supporting a patient may find our bystander guide useful. For the year-by-year context, see Kalamassery in 2026 so far and the archive hub.
