Kochi’s Hottest Days: Heat Records and Advisories since 2016

As of October 2026, Kochi has not been the hottest place in Kerala on any record day we could verify; that title usually goes to Palakkad or Punalur. But Ernakulam district has been under repeated IMD yellow alerts for heat since 2024, and in April 2024 the IMD confirmed a heatwave in Kerala for the first time. This page records those dates and the numbers reported at the time.

Key facts

  • Palakkad’s 41.9°C in 2016 is the highest temperature recorded in Kerala since IMD records began in 1901, according to The Hindu (28 April 2024).
  • On 27 April 2024 Palakkad recorded 41.8°C, about 5.5°C above normal, according to The Hindu.
  • In late April 2024 the IMD confirmed heatwave conditions in Palakkad, which Kerala Kaumudi and The Hindu reported as the first confirmed heatwave in the state.
  • On 19 February 2024 the IMD put Ernakulam under a yellow alert with forecast maxima of 37°C, according to Onmanorama.
  • On 11 April 2026 Kochi International Airport recorded 37.5°C while Palakkad reached 40.1°C, the state’s highest of that year so far, according to Onmanorama.

Why Kochi’s heat is different

Coastal Kochi rarely records the very high maxima of inland Palakkad, which sits in a gap in the Western Ghats. What makes Kochi summers hard is humidity: an afternoon in the mid-30s with sticky air feels hotter than the number suggests. The IMD’s heat products for Kerala reflect this, and in recent summers the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has repeated the same advice: avoid direct sun between 11 am and 3 pm, drink water even without thirst, and limit alcohol, coffee, tea and soft drinks during the day.

There is a gap in the public record we should be honest about. We did not find an official all-time maximum for a Kochi or Kalamassery station, so this page does not claim one. It lists state records and the Kochi readings that were published.

April 2024: the first confirmed heatwave

Heatwave declarations in India follow fixed thresholds. An IMD scientist explained to reporters in April 2024 that at least two stations had to exceed 40°C with a departure of 4.5°C or more above normal. In 2016 a warning had been issued but conditions were not confirmed. In late April 2024 two stations met the criteria and the IMD confirmed a heatwave in Palakkad, with warnings also for Kollam and Thrissur. The Hindu reported around 413 heat-related cases, including sunburn and heatstroke, up to 22 April that year.

Ernakulam was not the centre of that heatwave, but it was in the alert lists. Forecasts in May 2024 put Ernakulam’s maxima around 38°C. The heat ended, in Kochi’s case, with the 28 May 2024 cloudburst and the monsoon onset on 30 May; see Kochi rainfall records.

Advisories that became routine

  • Sun hours: KSDMA’s advice to avoid direct sun from 11 am to 3 pm has been repeated each summer since 2024.
  • Outdoor workers: in April 2026, according to Onmanorama, employers were urged to adjust outdoor workers’ hours, give rest breaks and provide water.
  • Colour-coded alerts: yellow alerts for heat in many districts have become common in February–April; orange alerts have been rarer and centred on Palakkad.
  • False claims: Kerala Kaumudi reported KSDMA dismissing viral posts about 55°C temperatures and exploding phones as fake.

The monsoon onset page shows when relief has usually arrived: between late May and the second week of June. Interns who come for the summer can read our internship stay guide, and anyone new to the area can get their bearings from the NAD Road guide.

Why this history matters near the NAD signal

March to May is when many men arrive in Kalamassery for internships, exams and new jobs, and the heat record shows that this is also when the IMD’s alerts pile up. If you will be walking or riding between the NAD Road signal, KINFRA, the Medical College or CUSAT at midday, plan around the 11-to-3 window. Ashraf Gents Hostel at the NAD Road signal lets rooms to men by the month or the night; fans, ventilation and other room details are best checked on the call to +91 90746 23855.
