Kalamassery’s Junctions: Premier, HMT and Medical College over Time

Kalamassery’s junctions are named after the factories that once defined the town: Premier Tyres (1962) and HMT (1964). The metro arrived at Premier Junction in June 2017, and from 2025 the HMT Road–NAD stretch of the Seaport–Airport Road began to move. Much of the junctions’ day-to-day history, such as when particular signals went up, is not documented in sources we could verify, so this page sticks to what is dated, as of October 2026.

Key facts

  • Premier Junction takes its name from the Premier Tyres plant set up at Kalamassery in 1962, which later became Apollo Tyres’ Kalamassery unit (Kerala Tourism; Tyrepress).
  • HMT’s Kalamassery machine-tool complex dates from 1964 and gave its name to HMT Junction, HMT Road and HMT Colony (HMT Machine Tools).
  • Kalamassery metro station, at Premier Junction in front of the Apollo Tyres factory, opened to the public on 19 June 2017 (Wikipedia).
  • In October 2025, NBM&CW reported that 1.6352 hectares of HMT land were to be transferred for the HMT Road–NAD Junction section of the Seaport–Airport Road.
  • Onmanorama reported on 11 August 2026 that the narrow HMT flyover had awaited widening for more than 15 years pending railway clearance.

Junctions named after factories

Most towns name their junctions after temples, churches or markets. Kalamassery named its two busiest highway junctions after companies. Premier Junction comes from the Premier Tyres plant, set up in 1962 on the Aluva–Edappally road (then NH 47, now NH 544). The company changed hands in the 1990s and the plant became Apollo Tyres’ Kalamassery unit, but the junction kept the old name; our Premier Junction guide and the Premier Tyres to Apollo history give the details.

A little to the north, HMT Junction marks where HMT Road leaves the highway towards the machine-tool complex that HMT opened in 1964, along with its housing colony. The junction became the gateway to everything later built on the HMT side: the Government Medical College, NUALS, KINFRA’s parks, and more recently the Adani logistics park and the proposed Judicial City. See HMT Junction today and HMT’s land and factory, 1960s–2020s.

The metro years

Kochi Metro’s viaduct runs along the middle of NH 544 through Kalamassery, and its stations here – Muttom to the north, Kalamassery at Premier Junction and Cochin University to the south – opened with the first section in June 2017. Wikipedia also records that Kochi Metro’s casting yard and “Metro Village” were located at HMT Colony, so the pillars and girders for much of Line 1 were made on Kalamassery land. During construction the highway was narrowed by barricades for long periods; we have not found a dated record of individual diversions or signal changes at each junction, so we do not list them.

After the metro opened, Premier Junction became one of the town’s busiest pedestrian points, with people crossing between the station, bus stops and the factory side. Onmanorama’s August 2026 report described two pelican crossings between Premier Junction and Aryas Junction that were often out of order, including one installed by Keltron, and long tailbacks from the Container Terminal Road junction towards Muttom at peak times.

HMT Junction and the flyover

The narrow road-over-rail HMT flyover near the junction is one of Kalamassery’s longest-running complaints. According to Onmanorama on 11 August 2026, residents had sought widening for more than 15 years, the work was stalled pending railway clearance, and potholes reappeared soon after the PWD filled them. The same report noted uneven road at HMT Junction and waterlogging at nearby TVS Junction.

Change is coming from the east. NBM&CW reported on 21 October 2025 that 1.6352 hectares of HMT land and 2.4967 hectares of NAD land were to be handed to the state road corporation for the first stretch of the Seaport–Airport Road’s second phase, about 2 km from the HMT Road–NAD Junction towards Mahilalayam Junction. The road’s longer story is told in Seaport–Airport Road history.

The Medical College side

“Medical College junction” is less a single crossroads than the end of a corridor: HMT Road and the KINFRA–Medical College road lead to the hospital gate, and Kalamassery Municipality lists both HMT Junction and Medical College among its ward names. The college itself began as the Co-operative Medical College and was taken over by the government later; see the Government Medical College history. We could not find a dated, reliable record of signals or junction redesigns on this side, so we have left them out rather than guess. Today’s layout is described in our Medical College Road guide.

What about a Kalamassery bus stand? We did not find a reliable dated source on a central bus stand for Kalamassery. Buses stop at roadside stops along NH 544 and the side roads; see bus stops near the NAD signal.

Why it matters near the NAD signal

Every resident of north Kalamassery passes through one of these junctions to reach the metro or the highway. Knowing that the HMT flyover and the NAD road link have been decades in the making helps set expectations about traffic. Ashraf Gents Hostel sits at the NAD Road signal, on the quieter side of HMT Road, with monthly and daily stays for men. Explore more in the Kalamassery history archive.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it called Premier Junction?

After the Premier Tyres factory set up there in 1962. The plant later became Apollo Tyres’ Kalamassery unit, but the junction kept the name.

Why is it called HMT Junction?

Because HMT Road branches off the highway there towards HMT’s machine-tool complex, which dates from 1964.

When did the metro reach Kalamassery?

Kalamassery station at Premier Junction opened to the public on 19 June 2017, with the first Aluva–Palarivattom section.

When will the HMT flyover be widened?

No date has been confirmed. Onmanorama reported in August 2026 that widening had been sought for over 15 years and was pending railway clearance.

Does Kalamassery have a main bus stand?

We could not verify a central bus stand. Buses use roadside stops on NH 544 and the side roads.
