The land deal that made a colony
HMT, the public-sector machine-tool maker founded in Bengaluru, chose Kalamassery for its fourth unit. A Lok Sabha answer of 24 August 1994 records that between 1961 and 1964 the Government of Kerala assigned the company 868.28 acres free of cost. HMT itself dates its Kalamassery complex to 1964. The factory went on to build CNC turning machines, printing machines and special-purpose machines, and it ran its own foundry.
A factory that size needed a township. Housing, the HMT Colony post office (PIN 683503), shops and a junction grew around it, and HMT Road, HMT Junction and HMT Colony became everyday place names. Over the decades parts of the estate were put to other public uses. The Government Medical College now sits on HMT Road in HMT Colony. NUALS, the national law university, and the Cochin Cancer Research Centre are nearby. Wikipedia notes that Kochi Metro’s casting yard and Metro Village were also set up at HMT Colony. Kangarappady: from the edge to the middle
Kangarappady lies on the eastern side of Kalamassery municipality, towards Kakkanad. Wikipedia counts wards 17, 18, 19 and 20 as the Kangarappady area, gives a 2011 population of 13,984 and literacy of about 96%, and calls it the fastest-developing part of the municipality. It is the only locality with a government Ayurvedic hospital within municipal limits. It is in the Kalamassery assembly constituency but under Thrikkakara police station. It is about 3 km from the Kakkanad Civil Station, Infopark and SmartCity.
We found no dated source for when Kangarappady began to grow, so we do not give a year. What can be said is that the institutions around it all came after HMT. These include the medical college campus, the KINFRA Hi-Tech Park and Startup Village area that OpenStreetMap places on Kinfra Hi-Tech Park Road in Kangarappady, and the IT parks at Kakkanad. - When Kangarappady was first settled, and the origin of its name. *-pady* usually marks a stop or junction in Malayalam place names, but that is a language pattern, not a documented history.

Company town to suburb
The two places show two kinds of growth. HMT Colony was planned around one employer, and many of its landmarks still carry the company’s name. Kangarappady grew more loosely, as a residential pocket for people working across the eastern side of Kochi. As HMT’s industrial role shrank, its land became the main resource for new projects: a medical college, a law university, a metro yard, a logistics park, a road and possibly a Judicial City.

The NAD signal is a short ride from both places, and the planned Seaport–Airport Road link will run from HMT Road through NAD Junction.
