Government Polytechnic College, Kalamassery: A History

Government Polytechnic College, Kalamassery, on NAD Road, is one of the older government polytechnics in Kerala: directories and the Directorate of Technical Education give its founding year as 1951. As of October 2026 it offers seven three-year engineering diplomas. Its detailed early history is thinly documented online, so this page states what the sources agree on and marks what they do not.

A 1951 start in Travancore–Cochin

The Directorate of Technical Education’s list of polytechnics, and education directories including Careers360 and Collegedunia, all give 1951 as the year Government Polytechnic College, Kalamassery was established. At that time there was no Kerala state: Kalamassery was in Travancore–Cochin, which was merged with Malabar to form Kerala on 1 November 1956.

Kerala Tourism’s profile of the college says it began as a technological institute and attained the status of a polytechnic within a year. We have not found the government order or a founding document that would give an exact date, or the institute’s original name, so we do not state them. If you have access to the college’s own souvenir or a dated government record, that would settle the point.

Some websites give other founding years for ‘the polytechnic at Kalamassery’. The 1946 and 1958 dates that sometimes appear belong to other Kerala institutions in the same directorate list, not to this college.

A polytechnic in an industrial belt

A polytechnic trains diploma engineers – the supervisors, draughtsmen, technicians and maintenance staff who run plants and building sites. Kalamassery in the 1950s and 1960s was becoming exactly the kind of place that needed them. In 1951, the year the college is dated to, Travancore-Cochin Chemicals was incorporated across the river at Udyogamandal; FACT was already producing fertiliser there; Premier Tyres opened in 1962 and HMT in 1964. The overall story is in how Kalamassery became an industrial town.

We have not found a source that documents how many of the college’s graduates went into these particular factories, so we do not claim a direct link. What is clear is that the college, the Government ITI and later CUSAT’s School of Engineering made Kalamassery a centre of technical education as well as industry.

Courses over time

Today’s course list is clearer than the early one. Careers360 lists seven full-time diploma programmes, with seat numbers, approved by AICTE:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Automobile Engineering

Kerala Tourism’s profile also mentions electronics production technology, and Collegedunia describes mechanical engineering as the college’s flagship diploma. Sources do not give the years in which each branch was added; the chemical engineering diploma fits the chemical plants of the Eloor belt, but we have not found when it began. Admission is through the Directorate of Technical Education’s centralised process – see polytechnic admission at Kalamassery and after plus two results. Careers360 gives the campus as 45 acres; we have not confirmed that figure elsewhere.

Where it is

OpenStreetMap places the college on NAD Road in Kalamassery, towards the HMT Junction end, about 3.5 km in a straight line from the NAD Road signal. The road distance is longer, so check the bus route before the first day.

Why it matters near the NAD signal

Diploma students and their families often ask about rooms along NAD Road because the college sits on the same road. Ashraf Gents Hostel, a men-only hostel and PG at the NAD Road signal, offers twin-sharing rooms with an indicative rate of about ₹2,000–3,000 a month, confirmed on the call; see the hostel guide for polytechnic students. More history is collected in the Kalamassery history archive.
