2012: Startup Village opens in the KINFRA park
In April 2012 Business Today reported that Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan would open Startup Village “on Sunday”, 15 April 2012, in KINFRA Park at Kalamassery. It was set up by the National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board, the Union Department of Science and Technology, Technopark and MobME Wireless, and described as the country’s first telecom incubator in public-private partnership mode, modelled on Silicon Valley incubators. Its stated aims were ambitious: incubate 1,000 product startups in ten years, and find a billion-dollar company started on a college campus.
The name outlived the programme. As of 2026, OpenStreetMap still labels a “Startup Village Big Bang Building” on KINFRA Hi-Tech Park Road, about 1.3 km south of the NAD Road signal in a straight line. The same KINFRA campus is where Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), which began in 2006 as the Technopark Technology Business Incubator, built its Technology Innovation Zone. For the park’s wider story, see KINFRA Hi-Tech Park history and KSUM in Kalamassery.

A documented graduate: Sastra Robotics
The clearest example of a company born here is Sastra Robotics. Wikipedia records that it was founded in 2013 by Aronin Ponnappan, Achu Wilson and Akhil Asokan at the Kochi Startup Village, and later joined accelerator programmes run by TiE and IIIT Hyderabad. It builds robotic and AI test-automation systems; in 2019 it signed an MoU with Lockheed Martin for avionics testing, and in 2021 it set up headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, with subsidiaries in the UK and India. Wikipedia also records a 2023 agreement to export 150 robots to a UK public-sector department and a 2024 investment announcement in the UK, giving the amount as $8 million in one place while its sources say £8 million.

2019: the Integrated Startup Complex
On 13 January 2019 Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan opened the Integrated Startup Complex, a 1.8 lakh sq ft building in KSUM’s 13.5-acre Technology Innovation Zone. Voice&Data reported that it brought together Maker Village, an electronics hardware incubator set up by IIITM-K with KSUM and supported by the Union electronics ministry, then housing 65 hardware startups; BioNest, a biotechnology incubator with the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, housing about 20 companies; BRINC, an international hardware accelerator; and BRIC, focused on cancer diagnosis and care. Startups in the zone had filed more than 30 patent applications in the previous twelve months, according to the same report.
A Super Fab Lab followed in 2020, and the 2024 state budget allocated ₹20 crore for the zone’s development, according to Onmanorama. Practical details of the complex today are in our KSUM founders’ guide and KINFRA Hi-Tech Park guide.
Why this history matters near the NAD signal
The Startup Village of 2012 and the Integrated Startup Complex of 2019 are both a short ride from the NAD Road signal, which is why founders, interns and hardware engineers have long looked for rooms on this side of Kalamassery. Ashraf Gents Hostel at Ashraf house, NAD Road, names the Science Park and NUALS, neighbours of the startup campus, among places within about 3 km; the indicative rate is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable and confirmed on the call to +91 90746 23855.
