Nippon Kerala Centre, Kalamassery: What It Is and How to Get There

The Nippon Kerala Centre is a building on the KINFRA side of Kalamassery, about 1.1 km south-east of the NAD Road signal, next to the Zamra convention centre and close to NUALS. It is the registered address of the Alumni Society of AOTS, Kerala Regional Centre – an association of Keralites who trained in Japan through the Japanese technical-cooperation body AOTS. It is probably what the hostel’s public profile calls the “Nippon skill centre”. ASA Kerala runs Japanese language classes, QC and management events and member programmes from here. This page covers what the centre is and how to reach it.

What the Nippon Kerala Centre is

“Nippon” is the Japanese name for Japan, and the centre’s link is to AOTS, a Japanese organisation that since 1959 has brought engineers, managers and technicians from developing countries to Japan for industrial training, and runs Japanese-language training for them. Former trainees in many countries have formed AOTS alumni societies – voluntary, non-profit associations that keep the network going at home.

AOTS’s own alumni directory lists the Alumni Society of AOTS, Kerala Regional Centre (often shortened to ASA Kerala) with its address at the Nippon Kerala Center in the KINFRA Hi-Tech Park area, HMT Colony P.O., Kalamassery. It gives the founding year as 1968 and the membership as 393, and points to a Facebook page. The directory does not list current courses or events.

AOTS lists Japanese-language classes among the kinds of activities its alumni societies run around the world. Whether the Kerala society runs any of these at Kalamassery right now, and on what schedule, we could not confirm.

Search results also point to an Embassy of Japan news item about a Japanese ambassador attending the opening of an auditorium at the centre alongside a “Japan Mela”. We could not open the page to check the year or details, so treat this as background only.

Is this the “Nippon skill centre”?

Ashraf Gents Hostel’s public profile lists a “Nippon skill centre” among places within about 3 km. The Nippon Kerala Centre is the only Nippon-named institution mapped near the hostel, and its AOTS link is about technical skills, so it is very likely the same place. Note that “Nippon Toyota”, a car dealership network in Kochi, is unrelated.

How to find out about courses or membership

Course details, fees and facilities now have their own pages: the Japanese course and fees, halls, rooms and membership, the JLPT guide and Japan jobs routes.

  1. Start with the society’s Facebook page, which AOTS links from its directory (facebook.com/asanippon.kerala). Recent posts are the best sign of what is running.
  2. Visit in office hours on a weekday and ask at the building. Bring a phone number so they can call you back about future classes.
  3. Ask about Japanese language training if you are preparing for work in Japan; AOTS itself runs courses, and alumni societies sometimes host classes or JLPT preparation. Confirm fees and schedules in writing.
  4. Check AOTS programmes on aots.jp if you are an employee of a company with Japanese ties – some training is arranged through employers rather than individuals.

If you are looking for Japanese-language jobs or skills work in Kochi more broadly, the KINFRA park and nearby IT and electronics units are the obvious places to look; see our KINFRA Hi-Tech Park guide and workplaces near Kalamassery.
