Planning a trip to NUALS Kalamassery
NUALS hosts national moot court competitions, negotiation and debate events, seminars and conferences, and its campus is also used for some examinations and interviews. Most events now run in a hybrid format: early rounds online, final rounds on campus. That means many visiting teams come for only two or three days, often at short notice after qualifying.
Use the table below as a planning frame and fill in the specifics from your event brochure. For background on the campus itself, read the NUALS campus guide.
| Question | Where to find the answer |
|---|---|
| Exact reporting time and venue on campus | Event brochure or organising committee email |
| Is accommodation included or arranged? | Registration terms — some NUALS events include it in the fee |
| Dress code (court attire) | Competition rules |
| Printing and memorial copies | Rules; bring spares, as campus printing may be busy |
| Who to call on arrival | The secretary or student coordinator named in the brochure |
Arriving in Kochi and getting to the campus
- By air: Cochin International Airport is north of Aluva. A taxi to the campus is simplest with suitcases and files; on a budget, take the airport feeder bus to Aluva metro and the metro to Kalamassery. See airport to Kalamassery.
- By train: most long-distance trains stop at Aluva or Ernakulam, not at Kalamassery. From either, the metro runs to Kalamassery station. See Aluva station and Ernakulam stations.
- By bus: long-distance buses reach Aluva, Kalamassery on NH 544 or the Vyttila hub; the metro links them all.
- Last mile: from Kalamassery metro, a bus or auto up HMT Road to KINFRA. Say ‘NUALS, KINFRA’.
Arriving late at night? Read arriving in Kalamassery late at night and tell your coordinator your arrival time in advance.
Weather and what to pack
Kochi is warm and humid all year, and many NUALS competitions fall in October and November, when Kerala gets its north-east monsoon showers. Pack an umbrella, a waterproof cover for memorials and laptops, and a spare shirt — court attire wilts fast in humid weather. A small extension board helps when a team of three shares one socket at night.
Where to eat during a competition
Event days are long, and the area immediately around the KINFRA campus is not a food street. Ask organisers whether lunch is provided. Otherwise, the nearest choice is around HMT Junction and the Medical College, and Kalamassery town on NH 544 has more. Keep a snack and water in your bag between rounds. Our pages on food near HMT Junction and tea shops and bakeries give an idea of what to expect.
Where to stay if accommodation is not included
Teams that must find their own rooms usually choose between hotels in Edappally or Aluva, lodges around Kalamassery, and the homes of friends or alumni. Staying in Kalamassery itself cuts the morning commute on the day that matters most. Things to weigh:
- How early you must report, and whether autos are easy to find at that hour.
- Whether all three team members can stay together to prepare late.
- Quiet, a desk or table, and power for laptops.
- Cancellation terms, in case you are knocked out early.
A note on Ashraf Gents Hostel. It is a men-only hostel and PG at Ashraf house, NAD Road, at the signal in Kalamassery, and its public profile lists NUALS within about 3 km. It normally works on a monthly basis — the indicative rate is about ₹2,000–3,000 per head per month, negotiable, with one month’s advance — so for a two-day moot it may not suit. Ask on +91 90746 23855 whether a short stay is possible before you plan around it; it is a better fit for visiting researchers, interns or LLM students staying for weeks. Mixed teams should note that women cannot stay there.
Staying on after the event
Many participants combine a moot with an internship at the Kerala High Court or with Kochi law firms. If you will stay a month or more, see internship stays in Kalamassery and junior lawyers and clerks at the High Court. With a spare afternoon, Marine Drive and Mangalavanam are a metro ride away, and the High Court is right there.
